FIDM’s annual DEBUT Runway Show may be a few weeks away, but it’s the main focus of the FIDM Productions digital media crew, who are busy preparing for the three-day event during this exciting time of the year.
Attracting nearly 10,000 people over three days, the DEBUT Runway Show features designs by graduating students in FIDM’s Fashion Design and Theatre Costume Design Advanced Study programs, as well as work from Interior Design, Digital Media, and Textile Design Students. FIDM’s in-house video and post-production team handles all of the digital aspects of the live show that help to set the tone and pace on the runway with captivating music, motion graphics, short videos featuring interviews with each of the designers. This year, the Graphic Design Students are also involved in a special industry collaboration with Signal Snowboards– details of which will be revealed on the runway!
FIDM Digital Media Alumna Julie Lee is excited to be working on DEBUT this year as a full-time editor and motion graphics designer in the FIDM Productions department.
“We are on our toes. Everyone really buckles down this time of year,” says Lee, who worked on motion graphics for DEBUT 2012 and is assisting in various aspects of both filming and post-production this year.
“This year, I’ve been more involved on the production side for DEBUT,” she says. “It’s definitely exciting, challenging and a little nerve-wracking, only because you want it to be good. You’re always your worst critic and that definitely applies to myself.”
As an editor for FIDM Productions, Lee actually handles various aspects of post-production, from motion graphics design, to preparing and editing footage and more, which is typical of graduates of FIDM’s dynamic Digital Media major.
“Being a digital media alum, I pretty much apply everything I learned in school to my work,” says Lee. “The programs that we use are the programs that I learned. The camera work, exporting, importing– it’s everything I learned in my classes. Except, now I’m working on a big production with people who are going to be seeing this work. I feel like it’s very rewarding.”
Inspiration for FIDM DEBUT 2013
Black and white, film noir and romance….

Every year, the FIDM Productions team pushes themselves both creatively and technically to make each show bigger and better. A romantic “Paris” feel inspired the theme for the FIDM DEBUT Runway 2013 Show– a big leap from last year’s slick urban-inspired graphics. To capture a dramatic, thematic vibe, editors are exploring high contrast lighting, and monochromatic black and white footage. Interviews with the fashion designers will feel intimate and poetic, with tight close-ups and abstract shots.
Filmed with a Cannon C-300, Cannon 5D- Mark II and Cannon 5D Mark III on the stage in-house at FIDM, the footage is being edited in Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro and Avid this year. As we get closer to DEBUT on March 21, 22 and 23 this year, expect to see more behind-the-scenes interviews about the creative process with the post-production crew like Lee.
“The best part about being an editor is that you can be as creative as you want as long as you have the basic foundation story telling,” she says. “Once you know who your audience is, the message you want to convey and what the tone is, you can pretty much do whatever you want. There’s no real linear way to do things, which I think is great. It’s almost like a tailored piece to my own taste. You get to express yourself.”
