Typography Tuesday: Inspiring Magazine Design & Typography Projects by FIDM Students

For Typography Tuesday this week, check out impressive projects by FIDM Graphic Design Students, Jennyfer Cienfuegos and Jeffrey Lo. The projects below are finals from  Typography and Publication Design, two Graphic Design courses.

Students earning their Graphic Design degree at FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising study the fundamental traditions of typography which provides the foundation for developing their personal aesthetic.

In Jennyfer’s final Typography project below, explore how she applies basic principles and elements of design to develop typographic logos, a two-page spread based on hand-letterer Luca Barcellona, an imagined advertisement, and more.

FIDM’s Publication Design course challenges Graphic Design Students to take these skills even further. Crafting a 40-page magazine into a harmonious and legible design, students design everything from the cover and masthead, to the in-house advertisement and all magazine spreads. While students utilize many found images for the advertisements, they often incorporate their own photography, illustrations and graphics; and all imagery must be cohesive with the students’ intended audience.

For example, check out Jeffrey’s final magazine, from Publication Design, below. He incorporated his own photography on page 15 (“Joanne Chen), and designed the typography in the advertisement for Bejing Holiday Resort on page 16.
