Typography Tues: Ken Barber of Famous Foundry House Industries Talks Hand-Lettering & Design

Typography aficionados, check out this great interview with typeface designer, Ken Barber, the lead letterer at internationally renowned type foundry, House Industries.

In the video below, Gestalten.tv interviews Barber during a recent visit to Gestalten Space in Berlin where he gave a workshop exploring the creative process of hand-lettering, and the application of illustrative letterforms in contemporary graphic design. Barber discusses the positive impact that drawing, and hand lettering can have on one’s overall design aesthetic.

Comparing the principles and elements of publication design to lettering, Barber states, “You need a sense of balance and contrast, the way the elements relate to one another. When you’re doing a piece of lettering, you have to think in those terms as well.”

The video is full of excellent examples of exquisite typography, and Barber provides some inspiring advice for effective design practices.
