Despite the exciting new possibilities that digital design has to offer, the tactile qualities of print design can be engaging and effective in a way that digital can’t. As a designer, it’s important to understand the capabilities and limitations of both print and digital design.
Trip Print Press is a one-man letter press print shop based in Toronto that offers all the best services of the print medium: foil stamping, heavy impression, blind impression, embossing, die cutting, finishing- all the qualities that make print design dazzle.
Design/production studio, Brought To You By, developed a nostalgic short video featuring Nicholas Kennedy, the man behind Trip Print Press published below. The cinematography and music reinforce Kennedy’s passion, and demonstrates the unique qualities and detailed attention that it takes to produce beautiful print design.
“We were so wowed with his work and amazing shop from day one, we found each subsequent visit was getting longer and longer. It’s the kind of place you don’t want to leave,” says the Brought To You By team on its Vimeo page. “It was a perfect storm of opportunity to record both the process of this new brand coming to life and the inner workings of a truly amazing letterpress shop.”
Students at FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising studying Graphic Design learn about various print processes in their Pre-Press Production course, taught by John Clifford. Read more about Pre-Press Production at this link.
