Time Magazine has released its “Top 10 of Everything” lists for 2010, which includes 50 lists in categories including News & Politics, Arts & Entertainment, Science in Society, Business & Tech and Pop Culture. As a designer, I find the Top 10 Magazine Covers and Top 10 TV Commercials the most interesting and relevant to the industry.
Writer D.W. Pine compiles the magazine covers section, commenting about his number one choice: Rolling Stones’ magazine cover featuring rapper Eminem. Pine states, “ I like this cover not just because I’m a fan of Eminem … but also because photographer Mark Seliger created an image that is so incredibly revealing without actually revealing much of Eminem’s face. True, the former Slim Shady looks as if he should be wielding a lightsaber, but if you cover up all the headlines on the left, you can still recognize him — a testament to his star quality. It’s an extremely impactful image that draws a complex celebrity from out of the shadows while leaving him in one.”

Also entertaining and interesting is the Top 10 TV Commercials list. Check out two of my personal favorites below, or click here for a full list. Taking four of the top 10 coveted spots on the list is advertising agency Wieden & Kennedy, who designed both of the ads below. This first commercial below, “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” gathered 24.2 million global views, according to the agency’s blog and was part of a highly successful re-branding campaign for Old Spice.
