Entertainment Design Wed: The Sound & Music of “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”

SoundWorks Collection, a site dedicated to profiling the “greatest and upcoming sound minds from around the world,” recently debuted a video below featuring the industry professionals behind the sound and music effects for Columbia Pictures’ feature film, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, directed by David Fincher.

Music composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, (who also earned a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for their work for Fincher’s the film, The Social Network), supervising sound editor, Ren Klyce, and sound re-recording mixer, Michael Semanick, talk about their experience to set the mood for Fincher’s American adaptation of Steig Larrson’s best-selling Millenium trilogy.

“This movie is intense. It’s got you on the edge of the seat,” says Semanick. “Sound just helps elevate that, just helps support it all.”

Some of the topics of the interview include the team’s ability to bridge the gap between sound design and music to evoke tension, or provide insight into the characters. For example, Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) becomes a “walking symphony,” with heavy footsteps, jingling chains and multiple cell phone tones– small clues that indicate elements of Salandar’s lifestyle to the audience .
