FIDM Graphic Design Alumna Bri Emery takes on some amazing projects as the art director of Rue Magazine, and as a freelance graphic designer. Her most recent endeavor? Designing the graphics for The Beauty Department, a Blog dedicated to all things beauty-related by Lauren Conrad, and Conrad’s hair stylist and makeup artist, Kristin Ess and Amy Nadine, respectively. Incorporating a feminine pastel color palette, bold typography and retro black and white photography, Emery captured the fun and chic personality of The Beauty Department, whose mission is to deliver its readers with a “daily dose of pretty.” Emery, who also designs Dialogues, the Alumni magazine for FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, spoke with FIDMDigitalarts.com about this exciting project.
FIDMDigitalarts.com: Tell us a little bit about The Beauty Department, what is the Blog all about?
Emery: “The blog is filled with hair and makeup ‘how-to’s,’ nail trends, current obsessions, inspirations and a whole lot more! The content is bright and fun and very informative to the ladies!”
How did you get involved in the project?
“My friends Angela and Ithyle were shooting some of the photos for the project and recommended me for the design. Friends come in handy in this business.”
What was your role as the designer for The Beauty Department?
“I designed the look of the site, as well as provided template posts to work from! I wanted each post to have personality and style.”
Where did you look for inspiration for the graphics?
“Honestly, I saw a picture of a flamingo one day and got inspired, and the design came alive after that. Weird, i know!”
How is everything else going with Rue Magazine and your blog, Design Love Fest?
“The freelance world has been a dream come true. This week I have been redesigning the blog Cupcakes and Cashmere, a popular fashion blog. That will launch very soon! Another proejct that really has my full attention right now is BLOGSHOP, a Photoshop class geared towards bloggers that I will be teaching! I teamed up with photographer Angela Kohler and we are thrilled for our first class in May!”
