FIDM Digital Media Guest Lecturer, Diego Stocco, Inspires Short Film by Swedish Music & Sound Production Design Student
Sound designer and music composer Diego Stocco is known for his innovative and experimental approach to sound design, inspiring not only FIDM Digital Media Students locally in his home state of California, but students all over the world. Music and sound production student Alexander Eldefors sent us his short film project “Nature as an Instrument” inspired by Stocco’s work, all the way from Dalarna University in Sweden.
“Diego was a inspiration and ‘music from nature’ was one of my reference productions when I pitched the idea [of this project],” says Eldefors, who recorded natural sounds at a ski resort and used them to make the music heard in the video below.
“Everything was documented and edited to a song with synchronized video; both video and audio were edited simultaneously,” says Eldefors. “No modulation effects were used in the song, only basic EQ, pan, volume and compression.”
This creative and authentic approach to music composition for film is a focus for the Digital Media program at FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in which students study all stages of the video post-production pipeline. Stocco is one of many industry professionals who influence FIDM’s Digital Media Students as a guest lecturer. Watch Eldefors’ short film below, along with Stocco’s “Music from Nature” video for Burt’s Bees and FIDM’s exclusive interview with Stocco below about his creative process in our web series Take 5.
