From designing a stage set out of duct tape for a United Kingdom based band, to Websites for models, boutiques and actresses, and now a self-published book, Melissa Bergen’s organic hand-illustrative style of graphic design is picking up momentum since graduating from FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising just two years ago. Bergen graduated from FIDM’s Graphic Design/Branding program in 2008 and today is Creative Director of her own company, Melissa Bergen Design. As Creative Director, Bergen takes on every aspect of her creative projects from start to finish. Her projects include website design for actress Amber Stevens and model Vanessa Fitzgerald , a hand-painted mural for Venice-based boutique ME&Blue, and most recently, she wrote, designed and illustrated a vegan cookbook called The Kitchen & the Garden Patch.

The Kitchen and the Garden Patch is a unique cookbook because it is a vegan cookbook for non-vegans,” says Bergen. “A lot of people are looking to eat healthier or lose weight, but they don’t want to give up their comfort foods. This cookbook serves as a means of bridging the gap between health and habit so that it becomes easier to incorporate fresh ingredients into the diet, in an enjoyable way.”

In FIDM’s Graphic Design/Branding program, Bergen learned various aspects of print design, including logo development, corporate identity, product branding and licensing, packaging, and publication design. “FIDM helped me with networking; I met a lot of talented designers, both on the student and staff levels,” says Bergen. “I try to keep in touch with them in order to get inspiration and feedback, as well as let them know what I’ve been up to.”

Whether she’s designing album covers, logos and branding development for marketing materials, or publication design, Bergen understands the importance of organization and considers the ease of use for her intended audience. The Kitchen and the Garden Patch exemplifies her appreciation for color and vintage styling, beautiful hand-drawn illustration, and attention to detail.

“Because writing any type of book is a long process, I had to be very organized and thorough in my process,” she says. “From the way the recipes are written to the relationship between the typeface, illustrations, and nomenclature of the book, everything was carefully chosen to be cohesive.”

The Kitchen and the Garden Patch is available for pre-order until November 1 using Paypal or credit card on TheKitchenAndTheGardenPatch Website (and all pre-ordered books come with a unique vintage gift, too!). After November 1, the book will be available at Amazon.com, local bookstores and on TheKitchenAndTheGardenPatch Website.
