Congratulations! Interview with Newly Graduated FIDM Graphic Design Student, Martha Castillo

Martha Castillo was already an Alumna from FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising’s Fashion Design program, an education that had propelled her into a successful career as a Fashion Designer for more than 20 years. She made a decision last year to take her career in a new direction by entering the Graphic Design Professional Designation Program to refine her skills as a designer. Her final graphic design portfolio reflects her diverse background in product development private label and licensing apparel, and now graphic design with and emphasis in branding. Castillo presented her final Graphic Design portfolio last week and shared the following interview with FIDM:

What made you decide to attend FIDM?
I am a FIDM Alumna, class of 1990 and a recent scholarship recipient. I feel fortunate to have been exposed to the abundance of opportunities that I have had in my past. My meeting with the Director of the Graphic Design Department challenged new goals and ignited old aspirations, and made my decision to return for my Professional Designation Degree in Graphic Design a solid career decision.
How did it feel to present your final graphic design portfolio?
I felt like I climbed the highest mountain and moments of triumph and jubilation! There was a sense of achievement, satisfaction and resolution of my deepest hopes and desires. The excitement felt almost surreal reaching the finish line, but know this is the beginning of a brand new journey.
Tell me about your experience in FIDM’s Graphic Design program.
FIDM is one of the industry’s best kept secret weapons. They are truly an iron fist in a velvet glove, and pack a powerful punch. At large, the Graphic Design staff of instructors is in a league of their own, and I felt privy to participate in their program. The standards are high, and I was honored to learn from such an incredible diversely talented group, some of the best and finest the industry. I have clearly become a stronger designer now, than ever before.
How did you find your inspiration for the pieces in your graphic design portfolio?
Fashion, art galleries, videos, books, music, CSS galleries, news, current events, and poetry. I tap into these mediums and allow my heart, mind and creative vision to translate my thoughts and intuitive feelings onto paper, or a monitor screen.
What are your plans now that you’ve graduated?
My plan is to expand my existing freelance design business and help other graphic designers. Sometimes our paths take unexpected turns, and unknowingly it becomes a blessing in disguise. The key is not limit yourself; stay open to new and different possibilities, even those unforeseen. Follow you heart, stay focused and reach for the stars.
