Know Your Roots: Design Is History by Dominic Flask

Design is History? Dominic Flask begs the question with his graduate design thesis, a site dedicated to the history of graphic design called Design is History. Flask states, “as a designer it is important to understand where design came from, how it developed, and who shaped its evolution. The more exposure you have to past, current and future design trends, styles and designers, the larger your problem-solving toolkit. The larger your toolkit, the more effective of a designer you can be.” We couldn’t agree more.

“The site is meant to be used as a teaching tool for young designers who are just beginning to explore graphic design, and also a reference tool for all designers,” he adds. With brief quips covering of a wide range of design topics with accompanying visuals, I think that Flask is off to a great start in documenting the history of design. Flask organizes the history of design based on decade, and by category, covering everyone from Gutenberg to Debbie Millman.
He also includes recommended reading, like the Alex Steinweiss tribute book by author and designer Kevin Reagan (who happens to be a Graphic Design Instructor here at FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) in collaboration with prolific design writer Steven Heller.
