From community college student to working on visual effects and motion graphics for feature films in Hollywood, it takes a leap of faith and hard work to completely change your lifestyle, move to a brand new city and pursue your career dreams. Tyler Tometich, a recent graduate of FIDM’s Digital Media program has accomplished exactly this and now works in his dream career field.
We recently caught up with Tometich to learn a little more about his journey from student to industry professional as a Motion Graphic and Visual Effects Artist at Greenhaus GFX, a boutique entertainment agency that specializes in major motion film trailers, title graphics and more.
(FIDM Digital Arts) What is your job title at Greenhaus GFX and what does your typically work day entail?
(Tyler) “At Greenhaus I am a Motion Graphic and Visual Effects Artist. It seems like every day I get to do something different and new. This includes designing titles and animations for feature films and TV shows using mostly After Effects and Maya. What I love is that the learning curve is never ending. There are always new challenges which lead to new learning experiences. Being around other talented artists who like to share their skills and ideas is priceless. The practical experience of working with a company and deadlines is much different than school projects.”
How did you land your job?
“My final two quarters at FIDM I put a lot of effort into finding companies that were hiring and offering internships by searching online and through FIDM’s Career Center with the help of Nonie. I landed my first internship at Baked FX right before the end of my last quarter. A former student from FIDM, Kyle Brosius (Art Director at Greenhaus GFX) who I had met when he came to our class to share his experience with us and also prior at the career connections day in my first year. I believe that all of these things combined were how I ended up at Greenhaus.”

What was your background before attending FIDM?
“Before FIDM I was attending a community college in my hometown of Yucaipa California. I decided to make a big change in my life a took a chance to move to LA by myself and with the support of my family and friends to pursue my dreams in the film and graphics industry.”
Who inspires you as a creative?
“People who inspire me are the people who are passionate about what they do. Andrew Kramer is the reason that motion graphics became a reality for me. Before finding his tutorials I couldn’t even fathom animating anything myself. I also have been inspired by artist like the guys at Film Riot and Corridor Digital. To this day I still find time to watch tutorials and expand my skills.”
What projects are you excited to be working on right now?
“At Greenhouse I had the opportunity to work on the opening title sequence for the movie Entourage along with many others projects. As of right now, I am excited to say I am working on The Jungle Book D23 Announcement Trailer graphics, and also am getting to see and learn the process of stereoscopic 3D conversion which is amazing.”

How did FIDM prepare you for your current position?
“While at FIDM I learned a range of programs and skills that have come into play in the work that I do. We are trained to multitask in the industry… It seems that employers would rather see someone who is good at more than one thing.”

What advice do you have for aspiring filmmakers/digital artists?
“Learn a little about everything, and everything about something! Stay humble, there is something to be learned from everybody. Get hands on as soon as possible. Take advantage of all resources. Start your networking before you understand why it is important. Find an internship/job for practical experience. Don’t be offended by constructive criticism. Give 110% in everything you do, and get used to meeting deadlines!”
