Campos shared her insights on portfolio advice for new graphic design college grads, her day-to-day work life and more in our Q&A below:
Advice from Senior Art Director Giselle Campos:
Tell us briefly about your role as Senior Art Director and InnoVision.
InnoVision’s philosophy is simple. We are the country’s only anti-agency®, so we do everything differently. Our company is founded on over-delivery and providing service that is second to none with effective campaigns that deliver results. By researching each of our clients so that we understand their business inside and out, we implement strategies that are not only impactful, but successful. With a culture of free-flowing ideas, proactivity and positivity, I have been able to follow my passions and take advantage of opportunities that continue to further my career growth.
As InnoVision’s Senior Art Director, I get to work closely with our CEO/Creative Director, Ric Militi, and our outstanding team of account executives and copywriters to develop strategic ads, collateral, websites and much more for all of our clients. At InnoVision I am able to combine my love for fashion with creative campaigns to develop successful advertising that is not only different, but also effective. With my unique perspective of design crafted through my work experience and FIDM, I bring my high-fashion aesthetic to the modern advertising world to create dynamic, fresh and new designs.
On a daily basis, I design full-page print ads, brochures, billboards, signage, digital elements and more, elevating each line of copy to the next level with layouts and imagery that not only supplement, but heighten the text to achieve success for each client. Periodically, I also pursue my love of photography by capturing product, event and staff photos for use by our clients in their advertising. Moving forward, I am looking to become more heavily involved in InnoVision’s production department, assisting in the commercial development process. I have become the leader of our web division, developing, managing and overseeing all websites that InnoVision creates for our clients. From start to finish, I work on taking the client’s vision and making it a reality with elegant, clean and user-friendly websites that reflect the refined world of fashion I have always been passionate about.
What is the best part about your job?
Aside from our company’s culture, I love the diversity of the projects I get to work on. We are constantly getting new clients, so the possibilities are endless. I love being able to switch gears three to five times a day – I can go from designing a logo, to meeting a client or designing a website in seconds. Our CEO literally has to kick us out at 9 p.m. … that is how fun work is for me.
How does your current position relate to your education at FIDM?
I learned a lot of things at FIDM that definitely align with my position at InnoVision. From web design to photography, logo design, branding, pre-press and marketing, I feel so grateful to have gone to FIDM! It is safe to say that FIDM is one of the few design colleges that gives you all of the tools and knowledge that are needed to be successful in the industry, and a lot of it has to do with the amazing professors FIDM has on staff. I learned everything from strong work ethics from Ria Lewerke, to how to embrace being design-fearless from Kevin Reagan.
Tell us what you look for in job applicants – any advice for new grads?
Portfolio-wise, we look for designs and concepts that are effective and would work in real life. We love it when applicants include ads in their portfolio that feature more than just a logo and a short headline – it not only shows that they are aware of the elements that are necessary for a successful ad, but it also proves that they are confident with layout, design hierarchy and typography.
Anything else you would like to add?
InnoVision is constantly hiring and there are huge opportunities for career and personal growth at our company. I encourage anyone who has ever considered the marketing industry or that wants to explore their design abilities in a fun environment with coworkers that are passionate about their job to apply today. We would love to see what you can bring to the table. As InnoVision continues to grow, we continue to expand our client portfolio with new and exciting projects and endless opportunities.
