Q&A with FIDM Grad Jay Trumbull: Games Capture Director at The Ant Farm

Below, hear from FIDM Digital Media Alumnus Jay Trumbull who develops video game trailers at leading digital media agency, Ant Farm.

Digital Media Industry Insider Q&A:

Name: Jay Trumbull
Title: Games Capture Director at leading agency Ant Farm (specializing in digital, print and audio-visual matter for theatrical, broadcast, home entertainment, video game and music markets).

Your hometown: Orange Grove, Texas

First-ever job: “Besides the typical babysitting, and answering phones at my mom’s work at the age of 8, I was a general maintenance tech for a small hotel. I mostly painted fences and cleaned air filters and helped elderly guests figure out how to work the air conditioning unit.

First job in the industry: “I was hired for a couple of freelance design jobs in high school and just before college. Little things like designing new place mats for hotel restaurants in San Antonio, Texas, or new wall art for hotels in Albuquerque NM, and some logo work and head shots for aspiring talent when I got off the bus here [in Los Angeles]. I was snagged by the Ant Farm before I had even graduated from FIDM. I am still here. I started as a Production Assistant nearly three years ago and busted my… uh er …worked really hard and challenged myself everyday. I am now a Games Capture Director, which is basically a Virtual Set Director/ Cinematographer for Video game trailers and marketing.”

What music you are currently listening to: “I am open to suggestions.  On my iTunes shuffle currently are artists such as: Manchester Orchestra (will live and die by these boys), Duologue, Pretty Lights, Alt J, Beirut, Punch Brothers, Yo-Yo Ma, Mother Falcon, Fanfarlo, the Drowning Men, and of course I am inspired by the works of the greats ie: Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, John WIlliams, etc. It’s tough to stay on one artist as we are always getting new up-and-comers music in through our doors. Having an incredible music department that always has their ears to the ground really helps with this.”

Filmmakers/CG artists/directors or other pros in your industry that are inspiring you right now: “I am a big fan of Tim Burton. He just goes out and plays with the world, keeps things simple, and invites you along for the ride (at least in his early years). John X. Carey with his Dove commercial “Real Beauty” really struck a chord on simplicity and beauty. Christopher Guest, Wes Anderson, Christopher Nolan, Danny Boyle, Darren Aronofsky, J.J. Abrams, Michel Gondry, and recently Alfonso Cuarón, are among my top-respected filmmakers (so many to list, many of which I have not been exposed to). Directors of Photography, I would say, are whom I am really humbled by– including, but not to be limited to: Seamus McGarvey, Daniel Mindel, and of course Roger Deakins. They look at the world with such purity and really exploit a scene’s beauty. They have this uncanny ability to translate the director’s intentions and drive that emotion deep into you visually.

Briefly, tell us what the future holds for your industry in 2014 and beyond:

“We are currently striving to push the industry to things we have never seen.  We are always looking to capture a pure emotion from our clients work and share that with our audiences.  We never really know what our industry holds for the future, but we can always hope for the best.  Personally I am excited to see what our video game developers are doing with the next generation consoles, (PS4 XBOX one) as our developers are just as, if not more, passionate about the arts and entertainment as we are.Until then, we go out and play our hardest.”
