Get to Know the Officers of FIDM’s Student AIGA Group, The Red Dot

The first Red Dot meeting of the Summer 2013 Quarter is fast approaching. For those of you who may have forgotten, it’s this Thursday, August 1 at 11:15am in room 400A. We have an almost entirely new set of officers helping make your time at FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising‘s Graphic Design and Digital Media programs the best it can be. We’re some of the friendliest, coolest, most passionate people at FIDM (if we do say so ourselves), and we really hope you’ll come out to our first meeting and learn about all the exciting things planned for Red Dot members this quarter! We plan on running a pretty tight ship at our first meeting. We won’t really have much time to give you the lowdown on who we are . So, if you’d like to learn which designers get us going, our favorite places to find design inspiration, and what we enjoy doing in our downtime, read on.

Red Dot President, Candace Peoples

Candace Peoples Red Dot President

Candace Peoples – Red Dot President

Born and raised in…

“St Louis, Missouri.”

Currently studying…

“Graphic Design/Branding in my 5th quarter.”

The design medium you’ll find me using most is…

“the pencil. I’m pretty old school! I do all of my creating and sketching in graphite. Although, I am starting to enjoy working with pen and marker a little more.”

One of my favorite graphic designers is…

Marian Bantjes. I’m a huge typography and pattern geek and she combines both of them fabulously. Her book I Wonder is also a great read!”

I find inspiration…

“on Typeeverything, Inspirezme, Goodtypography, Pinterest, and Behance.”

My favorite place I’ve ever traveled is…

“I don’t have a favorite place yet!”

I’m currently listening to…

“Everyone who knows me knows I am insane in the membrane for Beyonce, but currently I’ve been listening to James Blake, Gotye, Emeli Sande, Solange Knowles, Jay Z, Wale and J Cole’s new albums. All three of those new albums are cycling often through Spotify! I am always listening to Erykah Badu, India Arie and several other “oldie but goodie” R&B and soul artists.”

The coolest place in LA is…

“Disneyland! I could live there forever. I’m just waiting to go to DisneyWorld, Disney in Paris, and Disney in Hong Kong. I just love Disney.”

When not designing, I enjoy…

“dancing or pretending I’m Beyonce.”

Bet you didn’t know…

“I love to dance! It’s my life and my first love. I was a dancer for 11 years before I moved here, and I will be getting back to the studio soon. I miss it terribly.”

You should join the Red Dot…

“if you want to be a boss. Simple (ha!). In all seriousness and disregard to the fact that I am a fan of Beyonce, I remember I saw a sign in a workplace that said, “You have the same amount of hours in a day as Beyonce.” In other words, your success is determined by you, which in turn, for me, forms the question “How hungry are you?” I just think students should take advantage of every resource that is presented to them for their benefit. Why not?

Red Dot Vice President, Sara Berkes

Sara Berkes Red Dot Vice President

Sara Berkes – Red Dot Vice President

Born and raised in…

“West Vancouver, Canada.”

Currently studying…

“Graphic Design/Branding (Professional Designation) in my 4th quarter.”

The design medium you’ll find me using most is…

“InDesign! I like to bring everything I’ve done in Illustrator or Photoshop and lay it out in InDesign. I like the structure.”

One of my favorite graphic designers is…

“I am currently really digging the work of Kate Arends of the blog Wit & Delight. This lady is seriously talented, and has around 2 million followers on Pinterest, which I find absolutely mind boggling.”

I find inspiration…

“in so many places. I feel like I’m constantly being inspired, it’s actually a bit exhausting sometimes. I love design magazines like How Design, Computer Arts, Print, and Uppercase. I also enjoy things like TEDTalksPinterest, Lovely Package, and Designspiration. I also read a lot of design books, some that I order off Amazon, but most that I check out of the FIDM Library. There are far too many to list here, but if you’re ever interested, I have a lot of recommendations.”

My favorite place I’ve ever traveled is…

“Prince Edward Island in Canada. I just went there summer break for Canada Day. It was every image of pastoral beauty—old whitewashed churches, roadside cows, and fields as far as the eye could see, with the beautiful Atlantic ocean encircling it all. I had really cheap, amazing lobster.”

I’m currently listening to…

“Grimes, Arcade Fire (always), She & Him, Hundred in the Hands, Father John Misty, Volcano Choir, Leila, Suuns, Bibio, Kwes, and Braids. My boyfriend is an audio engineer so he introduces me to a lot of weird and wonderful music.”

The coolest place in LA is…

“the LACMA! It’s amazing. I was astounded by the size of it the first time I went. Not only are there awesome exhibits—the architecture is also incredible.”

When not designing, I enjoy…

“sewing, knitting, baking and reading lots of books. It’s entirely possible I’m just a really hip 90 year-old with amazing plastic surgery. We do live in Los Angeles, after all!”

Bet you didn’t know…

“that before I applied to FIDM I seriously considered becoming a professional poet. Luckily, every poetry program I applied to had the excellent foresight to reject me, and thus save me from a life spent in agony over finding the perfect description for a certain shade of blue—which, coincidentally, I traded in for the agony of trying to actually find the shade of blue.”

You should join the Red Dot…

“because your time at FIDM is short, and your contact with other students in your major is often limited to those in your own intake quarter. One day we’re all going to be out there in that big, scary world together, but it’ll seem a whole lot less scary if you know other people out there too. Plus, we have so many cool things planned, and are working really hard to make the Red Dot the best student group you ever join, and it would really be a shame if you missed it.”

Red Dot Social Media Coordinator, Tori Baldridge

Born and raised in…

“Los Angeles, California”

Currently studying…

“Graphic Design/Branding in my 4th quarter.”

The design medium you’ll find me using most is…

“I love Photoshop! There is something so great about being able to alter a seemingly boring photo into something beautiful and unique.”

Some of my favorite graphic designers are…

“I find it awfully intimidating looking at seasoned professional graphic designers in the field, but I will look at blogs with an emphasis in design like DesignLoveFestBlog Milk, and Breanna Rose to name a few.”

I find inspiration…

“on places like Pinterest and Issuu. I also enjoy viewing past student’s portfolios to get a better sense of where I stand as a designer.”

My favorite place I’ve ever traveled is…

“I am the biggest homebody you’ll ever meet, but I once traveled to Sweden when I was 12 and was instantly smitten with the people and culture. I hope to return one day to soak up even more of the beautiful country.”

I’m currently listening to…

“I love all types of music, although country might be my absolute favorite. Carrie Underwood anyone?”

The coolest place in LA is…

“I love venturing to LA swap meets! You find the most amazing things and get to meet people from all over this huge city.”

When not designing, I enjoy…

“a nice nap, spending time with my family, or updating my fashion/lifestyle blog. I also never turn down a good movie.”

Bet you didn’t know…

“I went to college on a soccer scholarship, but ultimately felt like I wanted to find something I was really passionate about. Then, I wound up here at FIDM and it has been the best fallback I could have ever hoped to find.”

You should join the Red Dot…

“because it’s a great way to meet like-minded students similar to you! Whether you’re new to LA or a seasoned veteran, I think everyone could use a group to help them feel in the mix. It’s also a great way to get exposure to design firms and meet designers in the industry.”

Red Dot Secretary, Korey Leach

“Wellston, Ohio.”

Currently studying…

“Graphic Design/Branding (Professional Designation) in my 4th quarter.”

The design medium you’ll find me using most is…

“I’m quickly falling in love with all the Adobe programs, but Illustrator still has to be my favorite. My background in fashion design probably has a lot to do with that.”

One of my favorite graphic designers is…

“David Carson. I find his grunge style and use of typography very intriguing. I also love that he’s not afraid to push limits and stray from the normal.”

I find inspiration…

“lately, on Pinterest and Instagram. I can spend hours continuously being astonished with the things I find.”

My favorite place I’ve ever traveled is…

“During spring break I travelled to Belize and stayed in a cabana in the middle of the jungle. The experience was amazing. I kayaked down the Moho River, swam through Blue Creek Cave, and went on nocturnal hikes through the jungle.”

I’m currently listening to…

“The music I listen to varies immensely depending on the day. Sometimes I’ll listen to Nirvana, sometimes Katy Perry, and sometimes even Shania Twain (ha!). It honestly just depends on the day.”

The coolest place in LA is…

“Necromance. It’s a curiosity shop on Melrose. They have anything from diaphonized rats to monkey skulls.”

When not designing, I enjoy…

“venturing out, finding new places and trying new things. Most recently, I went surfing for the first time.”

Bet you didn’t know…

“My favorite feeling in the world is getting a tattoo.”

You should join the Red Dot…

“because it’s a great way to meet and build connections with other designers. Red Dot also helps you gain insight and further your knowledge about what you’ll be doing after FIDM.”

Be sure follow Korey on Pinterest and Instagram!
