FIDM Museum & Galleries unveiled its 6th Annual Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design exhibit this week, featuring more than 75 costumes from a variety of Primetime Emmy® – nominated shows including Boardwalk Empire, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Once Upon a Time, Pan Am, Smash, and Magic City.
As much as we appreciate fashion, as graphic designers and digital media artists who appreciate the art of entertainment graphics, we found ourselves geeking out over other Emmy®-related design elements.
For example, check out the official key art for this year’s awards show dedicated to national primetime television excellence. With a sleek, bold illustration of the Emmy® statuette set upon a royal blue nighttime sky, the minimalist imagery definitely sets the tone for the awards show’s sophisticated, elegant vibe.
If you were wondering about where the elegant statuette came from, the Television Academy explained its history was in a recent press release:
“The Emmy statuette was created in 1948 when Television Academy founders ran a contest to design a trophy for their annual awards ceremony recognizing excellence in the newly-created television industry. Engineer Louis McManus submitted the winning design that depicted a winged ‘muse of art, uplifting the electron of science.’ McManus’ wife was the model for the muse.”
This year, the HBO network is getting attention with a total of 81 Emmy® nominations for shows like Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Girls, and Veep. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences certainly didn’t overlook other heavy-hitting shows like Man Men, Breaking Bad, 30 Rock and Modern Family with key nominations in various categories. The full list of nominations can be downloaded here.
While browsing the list of Emmy® nominations, we couldn’t help but notice one curious category: Outstanding Commercial. You’ll have to wait until Sunday, September 23 to see what shows and television pros receive their honors… but in the mean time, enjoy the commercials that The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences consider worthy of your attention below.
