Josh, along with his younger brother, Jacob Lirio, and friend, Justin Casem, has been developing and designing the high-fashion street wear brand since 2008, he says.
“The story behind the brand’s name is about a group of people– brothers– who build their dream from scratch (or the streets) and do what ever it takes to achieve success– or luxury,” he says.
The graphic designs seen on all of the BSL T-Shirts (shown below) are designed by Josh, and inspired by high fashion luxury brands like Versace, Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, he says. The designs include Josh’s original illustrations that incorporate classic Roman and Greek-inspired symbols and architecture, animals, archetypes, and religious symbols.
Josh heard about FIDM’s Graphic Design program at his high school, Gahr High School in Norwalk, California. Although he taught himself how to use Photoshop and Illustrator from a young age, Josh says he came to FIDM to surround himself with other creative individuals and develop his design skills even further.
“I wanted to surround myself with different types of designers and artists, to get inspiration from them,” he says. “I don’t have a lot of friends who are into art, but at FIDM I feel comfortable being around people who have the same interests that I do.”
“If I was a graphic designer for a company like Stussy doing apparel, I would be so happy,” he says.
This Saturday, May 12, BSL will be hosting a special launch event to officially release their brand to the public at Monk Space Gallery in Los Angeles from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Along with a booth with BSL T-Shirts available for sale, there will also be refreshments and a DJ, and Josh will have more of his art on display.
