Featured Event: “Small Gift LA” Exhibit to Celebrate Hello Kitty

By L. Jennings
Sanrio BagSmall Gift LA….hmmmmmm, I love making up my own phonetics too, I love shopping and guess what? I love Hello Kitty.  When I was a kid I used to go to the mall and wanted to buy all the trinkets at the Sanrio store… kitty stickers, frog watches, bunny backpacks and at the end of the day I would leave only buying gum. That green apple gum was all my tween budget could afford (but hey- it was good!).
I’m not the only one who spent my childhood pining away for items like a Hello Kitty trashcan. The Hello Kitty empire has become one of the most powerful brands in the world, adorning some 50,000 products in 60 countries, according to USA Today.

Now, Sanrio is celebrating Hello Kitty‘s 50th anniversary with the Small Gift LA art exhibit. This show sounds so fun, inspired by its “small gift, big smile” philosophy and features artwork inspired by Sanrio characters by 50 different artists. It opened November 12 at Barker Hanger, the same venue that hosts FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising‘s debut fashion show every year, which makes it’s a sign that you need to go.  Plus- (I must plug this): there is a Retro 80s Prom Party Saturday November 20th.  The roving exhibit will be up November 21.  Don’t forget the gum!
