Don’t miss the world premiere of the musical iGhost, co-written by Doug Haverty, an award winning playwright and lyricist and Graphic Design Instructor at FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising . The musical comedy is a modern take on Oscar Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost short story, focused around Virginia Otis, an art student who discovers a ghost at Canterville Chase, a castle outside of London. The story follows Virginia as she “unleashes bluetooth, wireless wizardry into a haunted castle with bombastic, humorous and surprisingly romantic results.”
It has been seven years since music composer, Adryan Russ, and Haverty (the team who also wrote the off-Broadway musical Inside Out) first began developing the musical comedy. Virginia, a “self-assured, undaunted, inventive and resourceful” young artist finds herself on a path of self-discovery, both personally and professionally. The two-act play features 13 actors performing in the style of Broadway-Pop and the story unveils an underlying theme about taking advantage of technology to enhance our relationships.
“The underlying theme is connection,” says Haverty, “All these signals are zooming through us right now. There’s pictures and music and movies and text. You have to have the right receiver to connect to it. How do you connect to the right people, the right situations? How do you make those connections?”
Formerly of A&M Records and Vice President of Creative Services at All American Communications, Haverty has taught many Graphic Design courses at FIDM. He still takes on new projects, often merging his passion for music and design, through his design firm Art & Soul Design in Burbank, CA. Read more about Haverty here.
