Doug Haverty, a Graphic Design Instructor at FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, is also an award-winning playwright and lyricist. His latest play, Aftershocks, will be showing at the Lyric Theatre starting this week until June 16.
Formerly of A&M Records and Vice President of Creative Services at All American Communications, Haverty has taught many Graphic Design courses at FIDM. He still takes on new projects, often merging his passion for music and design, through his design firm Art & Soul Design in Burbank, CA.
Aftershocks is about “two escaped housewives from Ohio [who] are having the time of their lives living in a Valencia trailer park and working as extras in the movies. Life is finally fantasy-fantastic until someone’s past shows up on their aluminum doorstep.”
“Mr. Haverty’s play uses adoption as a metaphor to get to the universal human fear of abandonment and of how we manufacture myths to protect ourselves from losing what we have and what we dream of having … In spite of all the emotional rough and tumble, and scenes that would wring tears from a critic’s heart, the play ends on an upbeat,” says Leah D. Frank of The New York Times. “Haverty has shown again that he can write scenes of great emotional power … and he is clearly a developing new talent of note.”
