Although digital greeting cards offer a certain level of convenience, they certainly lack that tangible, tactile qualities that make snail-mail greeting cards so special (at least for the paper/typography lovers over here at FIDMDigitalArts.com). If this rings true for you, check out this cute new app called Cards that allows you to customize a letterpress greeting card from your iPhone and send it through the mail– no stamps or envelope sealing required.
“Take a quick snapshot and with a few taps and swipes, an elegant thank you note or ‘wish-you-were-here’ card is on its way to any mailbox in the world,” states Apple on the Cards iTunes page. “Choose from 21 designs and customize your card with a personal message and photo. Then select a mailing address from your Contacts and place your order in seconds. All your cards are saved automatically, so it’s easy to send an invitation or birth announcement to more than one person.”
It’s free to download the app, but you’ll pay sales tax and postage ($2.99 for cards sent within the U.S. and $4.99 to anywhere else) to mail your elegantly debossed greeting card. It doesn’t look like Apple offers a huge variety of typeface choices or truly custom designs… but at least you can incorporate your own photos.
Alternatively, if animated greeting cards are your style… check out this one from digital media artists Tripp and Jenna Watt of New York-based Phantasmic who specialize in music videos, animations, fashion films, and various interactive video installation projects.
