I first heard of Andrew Bannecker, a freelance illustrator based in Bethesda, Maryland, as a featured artist in the book Creative, Inc.: The Ultimate Guide to Running a Successful Freelance Business by Meg Mateo Ilasco and Joy Deangdeelert Cho (a recommended read for you creative freelancers).
The authors interview Bannecker about the transition in his career path from design school to a full-time freelance professional.
Curious, I scoped out his portfolio site and came to find that his illustrations have been featured in some amazing projects for clients like Coca-Cola, Target, Billboard Magazine, Wallpaper*, Starbucks and Harper Collins.
After some further investigation on Bannecker’s blog, it I came to find that his work has been on display in Times Square since February on a billboard advertisement for Chicco’s, a children’s apparel line, and was also recently commission by advertising firm Wieden+Kennedy to illustrate an ad for Guardian’s new iPhone app (both shown below). Impressive? Absolutely. I love his playful compositions, retro colors and textures, and the charming simplicity of his work.
