Originally from Chicago, IL, Chelsea Price graduated from FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in December, earning an Associate of Arts degree in Graphic Design/Branding. Her work reflects an affinity toward experimental typography, and strong sense of branding application with her music packages. After presenting her final portfolio, Chelsea shared the following interview with FIDMDigitalArts:
(FIDMDigitalArts.com) What made you decide to attend FIDM?
(Chelsea) I decided to attend FIDM after seeing that I could get my degree quickly but still be offered the courses I wanted. I felt that the curriculum was incredibly solid for my major and was impressed by the connections FIDM has to offer after you graduate.
How did it feel to present your final graphic design portfolio?
I felt so proud of myself. I knew what I was presenting was great and it was my best. All the hard work and struggle I went through during my time at FIDM really paid off once I could see my work presented in front of the [panel] and when they responded incredibly well to it.
Overall, what skills did the FIDM Graphic Design program teach you that will help you in the industry?
TIME MANAGEMENT! I was horrible at it before but FIDM has taught me how to prioritize my work and how to get it done in time to meet deadlines. Another skill I would say is very helpful is not being afraid to get a second opinion. A little constructive criticism can only expand your talent.
How did you find your inspiration for the pieces in your graphic design portfolio?
I actually have a folder on my computer called “inspiration” and it’s just full of random things like magazine ads, photography, paintings, flowers, quotes, fashion, furniture, tattoos, literally anything and everything. I’m constantly ripping pages out of my magazines and hanging them on my walls for further inspiration.
What are your plans now that you’ve graduated?
I’m taking a short break to visit home and to go to Australia, but when I get back to Los Angeles I plan on looking for a job with a publication company.
