Graphics Geeks: Get Hooked on (and Inspired by) AIGA’s “Command X” Graphic Design Reality Show

Command X is a live, graphic design reality show hosted by the AIGA (professional association for design) at their semi-annual Pivot Design Conference that pits seven up-and-coming designers against each other on stage in front of 1,500 peers and potential employers. The young designers are under pressure to revamp packaging, logos and ad campaigns in a short timeframe for brands like Elvis Presley’s Graceland, Captain Crunch cereal. Industry pros like emcee Michael Bierut, Ellen Lupton, and Sean Adams of Adams Morioka, critique and judge the designers’ work to narrow down the contestants to determine the ‘”next design superstar.”

Sounds a little cheesy, but the videos that are posted from Command X: Season 2 filmed in 2009 are so addicting! Graphic design geeks, I know you’ll understand. Watching the designers discuss their creative process, and the principles and elements of design to support their decisions will give you flashbacks to class and/or client presentations.

This year’s show, Command X: Season 3, is being held at AIGA’s Pivot Design Conference in Phoenix, Arizona from October 13-16, 2011. This year’s show is produced by Emily Oberman and Bonnie Siegler of Number 17 and the contestants have the opportunity to win awesome graphic design gear like the Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Master Collection, the Linotype Originals Library, Pantone Essentials with Effects, and of course, cash.
