Daily Inspiration: Blink-182 Releases New Music Video for “After Midnight” (Dir. Isaac Rentz)
Blink-182 has released the official music video for “After Midnight,” a single from their 2011 Neighborhoods album, directed by Los Angeles-based film-maker, Isaac Rentz.
As a teenager of the late 90s, it was to impossible deny the pop/punk band’s influence on the music industry and pop culture, and it’s great to see the band stay true to their artistic roots in their sixth album, the first released since their hiatus in 2003.
Blink 182, “After Midnight”
With Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus belting out expressive lyrics– which once dripped in teenage angst in unmistakably whiny tones– paired with the hard, fast-paced and unsurpassed beats of drummer Travis Barker, the group has clearly not lost the magic that helped define a new wave of music. After eight years, naturally, the trio’s attention has shifted to darker themes (as described in this review by Dan Caffrey of Consequence of Sound).
In the video for “After Midnight,” Rentz captures a playful romance between two youth psychiatric patients. Scenes of the couple running amuck during the ward’s after-hours exude a lightheartedness (despite the morose setting), and are intercut with wide pans and a generous number of tight shots of Blink-182 performing in a massive hangar (once used for making blimps, apparently).
Directing music videos for bands like Cage the Elephant, Manchester Orchestra, and Blink-182, Rentz has developed a reputation for his highly stylized, often quirky approach to film-making.
We are thrilled to announce that Rentz spent time with FIDMDigitalArts.com for our Take 5 web series, featuring interviews with film directors, graphic artists, illustrators and other intriguing industry pros. In the meantime, check out Blink-182’s “Up all Night” music video posted below, (also directed by Rentz), and more on his site (www.isaacrentz.com).
