Ten Intriguing Articles for Design Inspiration Chosen by FIDM Graphic Design Director, Steve Reaves

Inspiration is a critical element of producing creative work. Thanks to the Internet, we have thousands of websites, tools, and images at our fingertips to help spark our creative enthusiasm. Utilizing these great resources is something that is encouraged for all creatives, but sifting through this vast array of information can be overwhelming at times. One of the best ways of finding quality inspirational websites is to ask for recommendations from friends and colleagues that you respect.

Recently, we sat down with Randy Dunbar, a Graphic Design instructor at FIDM / Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, and asked him for his ten favorite websites for graphic design inspiration. Today, instead of specific websites, we asked Steve Reaves, the director of the Graphic Design program at FIDM, to provide us with some inspirational articles related to design. His list includes illustrations, posters, tutorials, photography, and so much more. What are you waiting for? Scroll down and ride the wave of inspiration yourself!

About Steve Reaves

Steve Reaves brings 20 years of design experience in the fields of Entertainment and Advertising to his position as Director of Graphic Design for FIDM. After earning a B.S. and Masters of Art from San Diego State, Mr. Reaves began his career as Art Director at B. D. Fox & Friends, Inc. Advertising. He then accepted a position as Vice President of Creative at Intralink Film & Graphics and eventually joined New Line Cinema, also as a VP of Creative, where he worked with all major film studios as well as TV networks and home entertainment distributors.

In the late ‘90s, he realized his passion for education when he received the opportunity to develop a Graphic Arts program for three of FIDM’s campuses. Although he continued to work for the next few years in Theater & Home Entertainment at Seiniger Adverting and Bingo Advertising & Marketing, he also taught classes at FIDM, and ultimately, joined the faculty of California State University Long Beach’s College of the Arts as an Associate Professor.

Steve returned to FIDM in 2002 as Director of the program he had helped to initiate. Since his tenure began, he has expanded the Graphic Design program to include an emphasis on Entertainment in response to changing demands and burgeoning markets in the industry of design. To realize his goal of providing education with real world, hands-on experience, he has worked tirelessly to ensure FIDM offers a solid industry internship program for both its Branding and Entertainment Design students.

Mr. Reaves has received many industry accolades for his design work. He is the recipient of two Hollywood Reporter’ s Key Art Awards, the Conde Nast Publishers’ Guest Editorship Award, and a Communication Arts Magazine award. He has also been a Key Arts Award Judge and has served on West Hollywood’s Design Commission. When time permits, Steve has and continues to freelance for films such as Bonneville, Enchanted, Blood Diamonds, Dead Silence, Harry Potter, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Pearl Harbor, to name a few. As an artist, he is currently working on a series of diverse, hand-sketched portraits in pen and ink with pencil color overlays. Mr. Reaves also provides pro bono design services to many non-profit and charitable organizations.
